"A Parent's Charge from the Lord
Deuteronomy 6:5-9 (NIV)
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your house and on your gates.
In Deuteronomy 6:5-9, God instructs parents to impress His commandments upon their children. Great! I thought as I pondered these words. Tell me, Lord, just how is this supposed to be done?
You see, I knew how to impress my boss when I was working, I knew how to impress others with a great meal or dessert. But I had no idea what God expected when He asked me to "impress" His commandments upon my children.
Not being a scholar of Greek or Hebrew, I dug out my Webster's and my beloved Thesaurus. I looked under the letter "I'" and found the word impress. It was then I learned that as a parent it was my responsibility to excite, fascinate, and wow my children—leaving a distinctive mark, applying with pressure, imprinting—God's commandments upon their lives.
I was game. I was ready to do the impressing, yet I had no idea how to go about it. I returned to Deuteronomy 6:5-9 and there they were, my instructions. Three simple words jumped out before my eyes. I would impress my children by talking with them, using symbols and written word.
